I am a student at a divinity school studying Theology. Well… I am supposed to be studying theology anyway … most of what I study seems to be Greek and Hebrew . . . non-stop… ugh!

On the side, over the last few years, I have developed an interest in Creative Writing, and especially Poetry.

I do not understand why I read Poetry since, so much of what I read makes no sense to me. I however keep doing it. There are some poets that I like or that keep coming back to even if I do not get them.

I like the beautiful emptiness presented by Juan Ramon Jiminez. I like the presentation although I do not agree with the ideas behind it.

I don’t get Pablo Neruda. I read and reread… and do not get his work. Additionally I do not understand how a Communist like him could write these things. Is his ideology not at odds with Poetry – in general ?

Then there is this woman – Cathleen Calbert … entrancing. And May Swenson and Mary Oliver… wow I actually “get” them. I see direction and genius in the former, and nature become luminous in the latter. Then there is Anne Sexton – so seductive. And of course Howard Nemerov – the master of patience.

Well… I guess Greek has helped me with Poetry in one respect. The word comes from Poieo – ποιέω- to create.
